This is not your typical fairy tale. Once upon a time you struck up a conversation with a total stranger on an internet dating site. You went out a few times, think each other is wonderful and then, seemingly without warning, he or she is parking their toothbrush in your bathroom and expressing worry because you didn’t call last night.
1. Being tethered to your cell phone
Now, I’m not going to out-and-out recommend that you steal things from your sweetie; wait, yes I am. I think my boyfriend switches between thinking it’s adorable and sexy when I wear his clothes, to thinking it’s annoying when I refuse to surrender his cowboy-style button-down when he wants to wear it but I’ve already decided it looks perfect on me that night.
I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty independent type of gal. Just because I am independent that doesn’t mean I don’t like some pampering when I’m down with the flu. He makes killer chicken soup! On the other hand, do I want him paying my rent for me? Definitely not!
We all know a woman (or two or three) who does absolutely everything for her guy. Some days you can’t tell is she’s his girlfriend or his personal assistant. Besides keeping his social calendar, she does his laundry, cooks his meals, plans his business trips, packs his suitcase and picks out wedding presents for his friends and family.
Though men like to believe that only the fairer sex is filled with insecurities, neurosis and other unreasonable relationship behavior, here’s a clue; they’re not. Men make their own mistakes when it comes to dating. Even though you think you’re totally cool, and super laid back (which in reality translates to I don’t do laundry very often and I always leave the toilet seat up), you have hang-ups of your own.
It doesn’t matter what sex you are, falling in love and entering into a relationship with a significant other changes your life. Things like sharing living space, cooking for two instead of just yourself and leaving the toilet seat down (or up, as the case may be) are just a few of the obvious things that will be different.
Even if you’ve embraced the concept of internet dating dating (hello? Why wouldn’t you?) by now, you still might be a bit wary of the grandfather of impersonal courtship, the blind date. I don’t even think online dating counts as blind dating; you might actually end up knowing way more about someone pre-first date if you met online than you would if you met in, say, a bar.
Why is it that married and attached people make it a mission in life to give unsolicited “how to catch a partner” advice to their single female friends? It’s annoying and usually not helpful at all, even though they mean well.
First impressions are always important, but internet dating has altered the whole scenario. If you’ve met someone online, chances are your first date will be with someone that you’ve already been communicating with, perhaps even for weeks or months.
